There are people who wait to be chosen, and there are people who choose themselves.
Lanard Copeland is the second kind. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1965, Lanard grew up with a basketball in his hands and a fire in his chest that no one could see but him. He went undrafted. The call never came. Most people would have taken that as the answer. Lanard took it as a challenge.
He walked onto not one but two NBA rosters, earning a place with the Philadelphia 76ers and the LA Clippers on sheer persistence and preparation. During his time with the Sixers, he trained and competed alongside Charles Barkley, one of the most dominant players in basketball history. That time left a mark. You do not stand next to greatness every day without carrying some of it forward.
In 1992, Lanard made a decision that would define his legacy. He moved to Australia. He joined the Melbourne Tigers and spent the next chapter of his life building something remarkable, something that had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with commitment. Over 532 NBL games, two championships, seven All-Star selections, and a Grand Final MVP in 1997,
Lanard became more than a player. He became an institution. His jersey, number 21, now hangs retired from the rafters. He has been inducted into both the NBL Hall of Fame and the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.
But this conversation goes beyond the trophies. In Part 1, we go back to the beginning. The streets of Atlanta, the early rejections, the lessons that shaped his character before any arena ever lit up for him. We talk about what it costs emotionally to chase a dream so far from home, what he learned sitting next to Charles Barkley, and why doing the work when no one is watching is the only real foundation.
In Part 2, we sit with the big question. When the final buzzer sounds, and the crowds go home, and the jersey is up on the wall, who are you? It is a question Lanard answers with honesty, warmth, and real wisdom. He now mentors young athletes, and the lessons he passes on are not just about basketball. They are about life.
In this episode you will learn:
- Why walking on undrafted was not a setback but a decision, and what that mindset shift looks like in practice
- What Lanard took from training alongside Charles Barkley that still shapes how he shows up today
- The emotional weight of being far from family for years, and how he carried that
- Why surrounding yourself with good people is not a soft idea but a practical strategy
- How preparation and persistence create the kind of luck that looks like talent from the outside
- What life after sport really asks of you, and how to find purpose beyond the game
If you have ever felt overlooked, or wondered whether the sacrifices you are making are actually worth it, this episode will remind you that the story is not over until you decide it is.
